You have probably heard of ECU remapping. TCU tuning is less well-known, but for drivers with automatic gearboxes it can make a significant difference to how their car feels and performs.
Here is what TCU tuning is, what it changes and who benefits most.
TCU stands for Transmission Control Unit. It is the computer that manages your automatic, DSG, S Tronic or ZF gearbox. It controls shift points, shift speed, torque converter lockup, clutch pressure and a range of other parameters that determine how the gearbox behaves.
Like the engine ECU, the TCU is programmed conservatively from the factory to suit a wide range of drivers, conditions and maintenance schedules.
Vehicles enhanced
How quickly the gearbox changes gear
The RPM at which it changes up or down
Affecting how firm or sharp shifts feel
Parameters on compatible vehicles
Behaviour and kickdown response
Important when the engine has been remapped
ECU remap: Changes how the engine produces power. More bhp, more torque, better throttle response.
TCU tune: Changes how the gearbox delivers that power. Faster shifts, better response, improved feel.
They work independently but complement each other. If you have remapped the engine, a TCU tune ensures the gearbox is calibrated to handle the new power and torque output.
Running a remapped engine with a standard TCU map means the gearbox is still operating with the factory torque limits. This can cause soft, hesitant shifts or premature upshifts under hard acceleration.

In some cases, optimised torque converter lockup and shift efficiency can marginally improve fuel economy. The primary benefit is performance, not economy.
Yes. We work within the safe operating parameters of the transmission. The gains come from optimising factory-conservative settings, not from exceeding design limits.
Typically 1 to 1.5 hours on-site. Can be combined with an ECU remap for a full session.
